Stephanie J. Block to star in the Kennedy Center production of Sunset Boulevard
I first saw SJB perform in a production of Falsettos in 2016. She was exciting and had a stirring and unique voice. She frequently outshined her costars Christian Borle and Andrew Rannells. In this production, a song from In Trousers, the sort-of prequel to March of the Falsettos, was added in to give her part a featured number.
Her Broadway career goes back much further. In 2003, she starred as Liza Minelli in The Boy From Oz, also starring Hugh Jackman. I would have loved to have seen that!
Later, SJB starred as Elphaba in Wicked, Cher in The Cher Show and very recently starred as the baker’s wife in a highly celebrated revival of Into the Woods on Broadway (one of my Top 10 shows of 2022).
There’s something really special about her performance style. She’s able to come across as both vulnerable and very powerful. Makes for some unforgettable performances.
Next up, she will be starring in Sunset Boulevard, a role previously performed by Glenn Close. Her performance footage has been stirring up quite a buzz.
Sunset Boulevard will run February 1-8, 2023 at the Kennedy Center Eisenhower Theater in Washington, DC.
