Brian d’Arcy James and Kelli O’Hara in a New Musical

Atlantic Theatre Company in New York is putting on a new musical called Days of Wine and Roses, starring Kelli O’Hara and Brian d’Arcy James this spring.

I feel like this show could go either way, but the pedigree is certainly great.

Who’s Who?

Adam Guettel – Music and Lyrics

Craig Lucas – Book

Adam Guettal and Craig Lucas are the team behind The Light in the Piazza, a beautiful and sweet musical about a young woman with developmental issues falling in love while she vacations in Italy with her mother. The music is both beautiful and romantic. Here’s a song from Light in the Piazza, sung by Kelli O’Hara.

Speaking of (7-time Tony nominee) Kelli O’Hara, she’s an amazing soprano who, in addition to starring in Light in the Piazza, also starred in a recent Lincoln Center revival of The King and I and a production of South Pacific. My favorite role of hers, of course, is in The Bridges of Madison County. She’s so great as Francesca, the lonely housewife who meets and falls in love with a fascinating stranger. I was obsessed with this show a while back. Ob-sessed.

Here’s a song from Bridges:

Brian d’Arcy James is a known Broadway star, as well. His best known role on Broadway is the lead in Shrek. He also starred in the comedy musical Something Rotten! and very recently as the baker in Into the Woods (one of my Top 10 shows of 2022).

You may also recognize him from 13 Reasons Why on Netflix or the Hawkeye mini series on Disney+, where for no reason, he looks like he’s on his way to a Toby Keith concert.

Days of Wine and Roses is scheduled to play May 5th to June 25th 2023 at the Linda Gross Theater.

  1. Kelli O’Hara was also great as Laura Brown in the 2022 world-premiere opera “The Hours” at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City (and in movie theaters through Fathom Events as a part of the “Metropolitan Opera Live in HD” series)!
