Michael R Jackson, the creator of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning musical A Strange Loop, performed as the lead last night in a special concert version of the show.
This is extra cool because the show is reportedly based on his life. The main character, Usher, is a gay, overweight, black playwright who tries to navigate gay culture, his family and also the theater world.
I’m curious if this show will tour after it closes January 15th. Despite it’s awards, it’s uncompromisingly not mainstream, but I could see it doing well in big cities like LA. Not missing a beat, MRJ has a new musical opening off-Broadway in March, White Girl in Danger. I found a clip.
