Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton was the best production I have ever seen on Broadway, and I’ve obsessed over several Kander & Ebb musicals, Cabaret and Chicago to name a few. Imagine a Kander & Ebb + Lin-Manuel Miranda collab. It’s really happening!
New York, New York is a new musical based on some (or all) of the Kander & Ebb-penned songs in the 1977 Martin Scorsese film, with new songs and additional lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Everyone knows the title song, but The World Goes ‘Round, from the film, is a pretty great 11 o’clock number. Classic Kander & Ebb (plus Liza Minelli). Check it out:
I think it’s safe to presume that any new song not written for the film will be co-written by LMM. Sadly, lyricist Fred Ebb passed away in 2004. The story itself will be brand new.
“It is 1946, the war is over, and a resurgent New York is beginning to rebuild. As steel beams swing overhead, a collection of artists has dreams as big and diverse as the city itself. But do these singers, dancers, musicians and makers have what it takes to survive this place, let alone to succeed? If they can make it here, they can make it anywhere.”
It has potential. Do you think the music will stick with the swing style of the original or break out into hip hop?
New York, New York begins performances in March and officially opens on April 26th 2023.
