It’s so TEMPTing

Exactly one year later, I got to see Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of the Temptations a second time. And it’s still great.

Ain’t Too Proud in 2022 and 2023

Ain’t Too Proud was a last-minute add-on to my NYC trip a year ago. I had the time, and I was curious. It wound up being my favorite show of that trip. I wonder if I was a little bit biased because it was the first show of the trip and I sat in the front row. I also cried at the end the of show, but I also wonder if that was more about lack of sleep thanks to the red-eye flight I took. (I love red-eye flights!). Nonetheless, it was a great experience.

Exactly a year later, I was able to see the show again here in San Diego. I was pleased that it was still very enjoyable a second time, as a touring show. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend catching the tour. The songs are so fun, and they blend really well with the story.

The only real stand-out in the cast this time was Jalen Harris as Eddie Kendricks, and maybe not for the right reasons. I will say that he has star quality and was a great performer, but he was maybe a little bit extra. Wasn’t sure how to feel about it. I just found him a little distracting.

The merch was on-point. I got the mug, and it’s my new favorite.

  1. I was so pleased with this show. All the actors had insanely beautiful voices.

This was a perfect blend of telling the story chronologically, but using the songs to express the emotions (like a typical musical) of what was going on in their lives instead of just “then we released this song, and then this song” (more like a documentary).

Of course, when you work around other artists, you can include some of their music to mix it up a bit, and this show gives us the ultra-super-fabulous, top-tier “Diana Ross and the Supremes” for some wonderful female voices, and allows Tammi Terrell to work in a duet.

    Loved it!
